Sister M. Laura Toman, daughter of the late Raymond and Anne Rose (Sablatura) Toman, the third of six children, was born in Houston, Texas. She attended Ganado Public School for the first four grades, then moved to the newly-opened Assumption School for grades 5-8. At the age of 13, she entered Nazareth Convent and attended Nazareth Academy for high school. Sr. Laura received the habit of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament on July 30, 1961 and made her first Profession of Vows on August 6, 1962. Sister attended Annunciation College in Victoria, Incarnate Word College in San Antonio and Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonia from which she was awarded a BA with a major in English and a minor in History. She received her M.Ed, from Southwest Texas State College in San Marco with a major in Administration and a minor in Psycology/Sociology.
During her 60 years as a professed member of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, Sr. Laura taught at St. Michael School in Cuero, then moved into administration at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Selma, TX, Sacred Heart in Floresville, St. Michael in Cuero, St. Patrick in Dallas, St. Michael Weimar and Our Lady of Victory in Victoria. During her 23-years as principal of St. Michael in Weimar, the school received numerous academic awards, culminating in its designation as a nationally recognized “Blue Ribbon School, 2006” by the U.S. Department of Education.
Sister Laura also served as Councilor in the Leadership of the Congre-gation from 1988-2000 and again from 2012-2018.
In 2019, Sr. Laura retired from her work in education and began her ministry at Promise Pointe in Raisin where formerly homeless people live in community in their own “Tiny Houses”
Some of the highlights in her life include her year-long Sabbatical in New Hampshire in 2007-2008, her month-long missionary trip to Kenya, Africa in 2009, and her trip to the Holy Land in 2017 among many others.
